How much cooking do you intend to do? That’s the first question you need to answer. If you intend to cook for a lot of people you will need at least one, three burner stove. You can choose from a stove that uses liquid fuel, or small bottles of propane gas Coleman and others make these units. Now if weight and size are not issues you can use a stove that uses a 5 gallon bottle of propane gas with a regulator just like what is used for your gas grill at home. They each have good and bad features. Using and carrying a liquid fuel is less handy than using disposable propane bottles but the liquid fuel is cheaper than the gas. The stove that uses the 5 gallon propane bottle is heavy but you seldom have to worry about running out of fuel and you can really do some cooking. These stoves not including the hose and regulator are available from $20.00 for a two burner up to $80.00 for a more expensive top of the line three burner. This larger stove will allow you to perform different cooking tasks including boiling, simmering as well as frying all at the same time. Other Camping Cooking Gear Along with the camp stove, your camping cooking gear should include some cookware, which you can choose according to what you plan on cooking. A pot and frying pan are essential and so too is having plenty of water for cooking as well as quenching of thirst. In addition, you will need to have food stuffs that will provide you with strength and which includes cereals, milk, eggs and these may be supplemented with bread, cold cuts, peanut butter, which are easily packed and carried over long distances. You will also need to bring along extra matches, who should be waterproof if possible and you could also do with a grate. In addition, your camping cooking gear must include essential items such as dishpans, washrags, towels as well as soaps and these can be carried in a plastic container. Since you don’t want to carry too much weight, it is a good idea to pack only limited amounts of cooking supplies, and these may include instant soups and remember to take along foods that (if you are in a group) everyone would like. Aluminum foil to wrap your potatoes, onions, carrots and butter should also be included in all outings. Don’t forget to use zip lock style bags to seal the food packets well. You would also be well advised to bring along a hand crank can opener and have adequate sponges for washing pots and dishes. Sometimes, you may want a Coffee Percolator that can be used with a camp stove or on a fire to brew fresh coffee which is always a welcome item, and you should ensure that the pot size is large enough to cater to many drinkers. Some campers think that camping cooking gear would be incomplete without a corkscrew. I on the other hand take along a cheap plastic cutting board which also includes several sharp knives. If you intend to go camping regularly then keeping a camp specific box of cooking gear is a necessity.
