More than anything else, your budget is going to dictate what lightweight camping gear you buy and what older, heavier items you leave in your pack. Use your common sense, as well as previous experiences, as this will tell you what you carried last time without using and what you can leave behind. Start By Weeding Out The Weight For most of us, a 30-pound pack will be the maximum you want to lug on your hike, but even that may be more than necessary. A first aid kit may be considered by some to be a non-essential item, as is a water filtration system, but you have to ask yourself if you are willing to take the chance of taking your hike without them. It is not abnormal for people taking their first camping trip to take everything they own regardless of the weight.
